Optimistic, yet often with an underlying current of melancholy, frontman and songwriter Ian Broudie’s tunes make him one of the great storytellers of English life.

Talking about the first single Sunshine from the new record Broudie said: “The song is about the sun being the source of life. I’ve had many dreams worrying about the future of an uncertain world, but then the sun shines and everything feels more positive and hopeful.”

It is 28 years since the release of their million-selling and hits-filled album Jollification, but songs from that record like Change, Perfect, Lucky You and Marvellous still resonate today. The band are also known for breakthrough singles Pure and Life of Riley, which was once the theme to the goal of the month competition on Match of the Day and was written about Broudie’s son Riley, who now plays guitar with the band.

Daily Echo:

The frontman says: “I always think music’s like attack and defence in football, or like politics, or like life. It’s about balance. And achieving that is the challenge for me.”

Together with Skinner and Baddiel, The Lightning Seeds captured the spirit of Euro 96 and every other football tournament since then with their anthem Three Lions, and with their gig in Southampton only weeks before the next World Cup in Qatar, its time is coming around again.

The band were last on the South Coast at Victorious Festival in 2018. They played The Guildhall in Southampton with Squeeze in 2010.
