UNIVERSITY Student's men's A' team inflicted a rare defeat by an emphatic 7-2 margin over York Railway Institute A' in men's division one of the York Badminton League.

Will Wiseman and Paddy Clarke, playing second string to the campus opening pair of Jonty Hiley and Ricky Kanabar, combined well to take all three for a season's best of 131-100. Hiley and Kanabar also took all their three rubbers for 182-154.

York RI A' earlier visited Selby Drax A' and scored an easy 7-2 win. Richard Pauw and Michael Scobie took the Institute honours with three wins for 141-82, including a 21-16, 15-12, 21-18 success over Scott Anderson and Dennis Bradley, who bagged both home wins.

York RI Tuesday/Thursday B' made it four wins in a row after a 7-2 away win over Selby/Drax B' in men's two.

Paul Forth and Charles Pasfield played some fine controlled badminton to set the Institute on the victory trail to record three straight wins for 126-88.

York RI B' Colts made it four from ten after a hard-fought 5-4 win at Fulfordgate in men's three.

Matt Hobman and Andrew Johnson took three home wins for 150-136, but Ben Weller and Dan Foster sealed the Colts' win in the last rubber with a 21-10, 12-21, 21-19 triumph over Mark Winfield and John Maule.

Leaders Pocklington scored a 6-3 win at second-placed Knavesmire.

Dave Brogden and Andy Limbert took three Knavesmire wins for 126-80, but Howard Johnson and Derek Burt sealed the match in the final rubber with a 15-21, 24-22, 21-16 win over John Major and Alastair Jewison.

Clifton B' Ladies moved into top spot in ladies two with a 6-3 home win over University Staff.

The match result was effectively sealed in the opening rubber, where Xiaogian Noble and Lucy Hutchinson beat Jo Wade and Sheila Mackarel 21-15, 15-21, 21-15.

University Students A' team's varying fortunes in mixed one continued.

They lost 6-3 at home to Clifton B' but then bounced back with a 5-4 win at Selby/Drax A'.

Jonty Hiley and Nicci Farr took all three student wins against Clifton for a return of 149-118, while Ricky Kanabar and Liz McFadzean clinched the student win against Drax with 12 and 14 success over Lisa Ward and Andrew Dunning.

RI Tuesday/Thursday A' went second in mixed two after a 7-2 home win over Huntington A'.

Mike Corley and Caroline Newnham belied their number three pairing status by taking the only Institute maximum for a total of 146-106.

Riverside B' lost their unbeaten record when they went down 7-2 at home to mixed three leaders Selby/Drax B'.

John Prickett and Aileen Graham set the Selby standard with all three for 147-129, including a 17-21, 21-17, 21-17 win over Alison Hyde and Andrew Newby, who took both home wins.

Mixed four leaders St John's, made it six from six after a 9-0 win at Shepherds B'. Steve Keeble and Sarah Critchley easily took the best Student return with three straight wins for 126-83.
