On Saturday, January 26, I was privileged to see many young people taking part in various forms of the performing arts, ranging from a rehearsal of the York Area Schools Symphony Orchestra to break-dancing.

The dedication and hard work of the children was evident, as was their enjoyment.

I met parents who gave up their time to transport their children and to raise money for equipment.

I had taken up an invitation from the city's Young People's Arts Officer, relatively recently appointed, who had wanted to meet councillors, including the executive member for leisure and culture, and brief them on what went on and explain some of the new ideas she has. I was, however, somewhat saddened that not one councillor from the other three parties managed to take up this opportunity to meet this enthusiastic officer and see the young people in action.
