BOWLERS from York and New Earswick are on the up after impressive wins in the Yorkshire League.

The two clubs moved into second place in their respective leagues, with York beating reigning division one champions Huddersfield and New Earswick toppling division two rivals Selby.

York enjoyed a fantastic 82-70 victory, with Frank Turner's team doing well to hold their nerve at Huddersfield.

After a great start, which saw them 14-3 in front after nine ends, they went into the last end 19-18 down, but a three gave them a 21-18 success.

Malcolm Thompson's team also did well, but were unfortunate to drop a three on the penultimate end to trail 16-14.

A single on the last was not enough for victory, but did help secure the away aggregate points.

At home, Paul Mooring's team didn't look back after scoring a four on the second end to lead 4-3 and they finished up winning easily 28-12.

Eddie Howcroft's side found themselves only one shot behind after scoring two on the 17th end at 18-17, but that was as near as they got. The visitors pulled away to win 25-18.

York's next league fixture is against Hornsea on Saturday, at noon.

New Earswick won 82-72 against Selby.

At home, Bob Edwards' rink scored a six on the 13th end to virtually seal their game as they opened up an 18-6 lead and they won 21-12.

Barry Johnson's four comfortably led 21-12 with six games to play, but then had to withstand a comeback from Tony Longfield's team as they pulled back to within one shot at 21-20.

A three followed by twos for each side gave Johnson's team a 26-22 win.

At Selby, Brian Gray's team were involved in a tough match which saw them regaining the lead with a single then a two to go into the last end 17-16 ahead. A dropped single gave each side a deserved 17-17 draw.

Paul Dawson's rink drew level with a two at 18-18 with two ends to play, but they lost them both and the game, 21-18.

Earswick's next match is against South Leeds on Saturday, at noon.
