YORK'S special baby care unit is to benefit from a week-long fundraiser held in its honour.

Staff at Cyclops Electronics, based at Osbaldwick, York, are holding a series of money-making events all this week to raise cash for the unit.

The company's management team will host a "play your cards right" event all week with staff competing to play. Every time a member of staff guesses if a card is "higher or lower" correctly, £5 will be donated to the cause.

Staff will also have to watch their language as a swear box will be circulating the office. And every time an order of more than £1,000 is placed on the phone, a member of staff will scratch a lottery card, and any winnings will go towards the unit.

Next Saturday, 16 members of staff will cycle 25 miles through Dalby Forest, using bikes lent by Cyclesense in Tadcaster.

Amanda Houghton, sales manager at Cyclops Electronics, said: "We do a lot of fundraising and as the baby care unit is close to a lot of people's hearts here we decided to hold a big fundraising event and get all the staff involved.

"We are hoping the sponsorship for the bike ride alone will raise £1,000 and I bet that the swear box will bring in a lot!

"It would be great if we could raise about £1,500 to help the unit."

Daniel Yodaiken, managing director, said "Although Cyclops Electronics is a global company, our head office is based in York and we are therefore committed to supporting local causes and charities."

York Hospital's special baby-care unit currently need funds to buy a saturation monitor, used to monitor the amount of oxygen in a baby's blood, a new incubator and an apnoea alarm, which will sound if a baby pauses their breathing for a 20 seconds or longer. Games are also needed to improve visiting for older brothers and sisters.
