UPDATE 2.30pm: The A59 has now reopened
A MAJOR route into York has been closed for more than six hours today after a crash.
City of York Council tweeted that the A59 had been closed in both directions near the Red Lion pub at Poppleton following a serious road traffic accident
It said a diversion was being set up through Poppleton.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said it was called to a crash at 7.18am snd the incident was still ongoing.
It said it could not give any more details of its involvement and referred The Press to North Yorkshire Police.
A force spokeswoman said at 1.30 pm that the road was due to re-open shortly, but she could not give any more details of the crash.
At 2.30pm, The Press was informed that the road has finally reopened.
