COUPLES want their wedding day to be the happiest day of their lives and for the day to run smoothly, but even after all that planning things can go drastically wrong.

Consumer Direct Yorkshire & The Humber receives a number of complaints about wedding-related matters, ranging from ruined wedding dresses to disastrous photos to honeymoons from hell.

Consumer Direct has a number of tips to help the big day be remembered for the right reasons:

* Set a budget. Know what can be afforded and stick to it* Always shop around. What appears to be a good deal may not be.

* Get confirmation of all arrangements in writing and keep all paperwork and quotes etc

* Before committing to anything such as photographers and florists, ask for references and ask to see examples of their work. Check to see if they are members of a professional association* Before purchasing a diamond ring, know the four Cs; cut, clarity, colour and carat* Agree payment dates and schedules with each supplier when booking and get these in writing* If a deposit over £100 is required think about using a credit card. Cards may have added protection should a problem arise* Always check the trader's refund and cancellation policy. A cancellation may breach a contract and could result in a deposit being lost* When ordering a wedding dress always check the price includes fitting and any alterations. Ensure that measurements are written down on the order along with any other specific details* When booking a honeymoon make sure the travel agent or tour operator is a member of ABTA, so that you are protected if they go out of business. If you are creating your own holiday and book the flight and accommodation separately, you may have different rights.
