CITY of York MP Hugh Bayley has been presented with a crest in appreciation of his work for the local railway industry.

Mr Bayley was given the brass GNER crest from one of its railway carriages.

National Express took over the franchise to run the East Coast Main Line from GNER in December and Mr Bayley has been involved with supporting both the companies through the transition period.

Jonathan Metcalfe, chief executive of GNER, said: "As the elected representative of GNER's home city, it seemed appropriate for Hugh Bayley to receive one of the few crests we were able to present externally.

"Hugh had a good working relationship with GNER and he has always been supportive of the railways in general, which remains an important industry for the city of York today."

Mr Bayley said: "I am really pleased to accept this crest in recognition of the support I have given GNER.

"Historically York has always had a strong connection with the railways and I want this to continue for many years to come."
