POLICE have appealed for witnesses to help them find a man who stole a handbag from a car outside a Thirsk supermarket.

They are hoping other motorists who were in the car park at the time may have dashcam footage that can help.

The handbag had been left in the car when its owner, a woman in her 70s, went to return a supermarket trolley at Aldi on Topcliffe Road, Thirsk, at about 1.30pm on Saturday.

While she was away from the car the man, described as white, in his late 40s, 6ft 2, with a 'wide build' and dressed in black clothing with a baseball cap, stole the handbag from inside the car.

Police think he may have had a second man working with him.

The brown leather handbag contained a black purse with about £60 in cash in it. "The handbag also had several sentimental items belonging to the victim, including rosary beads and photographs," a police spokesperson said.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who was parked in the car park at the time and may have dashcam footage.
