A RALLYING call has gone out for more people to 'roll up their sleeves' and support those facing poverty and hardship.

Ron Gatenby is the new president of York Vikings Rotary Club and has pledged its continued commitment to community projects in the coming year, warning that many local people risk falling through the net.

Ron, who lives in Skelton, and is chairman of construction and development company, Simpson, in Dunnington, has taken over the reins from Mick Fox.

“Our motto of ‘service before self’ has never been more relevant,” said Ron.

“We have a great track record of providing support for organisations like young people’s homeless charity SASH, the Hoping York Street Kitchen, and domestic abuse charity IDAS, as well as several local schools to whom we have provided Chrome books.

"We know there are many other people out there who would like to get involved. I urge them to make contact, roll their sleeves up, and join us.

"The need has never been greater and I feel sure they will enjoy the experience through the friendship and fellowship of the club.”

He added: “We are acutely aware that there will be many more individuals and families locally who risk falling through the net as times get tougher.

"The winter could well be difficult all round and it is clubs like York Vikings Rotary who quietly go about providing vital support where it is needed most.”

Praising Mick Fox for guiding the club through the year of lockdown, Ron said: “Despite never holding a single face-to-face meeting in his year in office, Mick kept the organisation thriving and has handed it over in excellent shape."

York Vikings Rotary meets on Tuesdays at 7.30pm at Pike Hills Golf Club. New members welcome.
