Novara Media’s YouTube channel is now back online after Google briefly deleted the account "without warning".

The media group is an independent, left-wing news channel founded in 2011 by James Butler and Aaron Bastani who met at a protest over increased university fees.

Reaching just under 170,000 subscribers, the channel describes itself as 'New media for a different politics'.

Google has since reinstated the channel after the YouTube account's content was "flagged" with its teams.

It has since admitted making "the wrong call" in a statement released this afternoon.

A statement from Google said: “Novara Media’s channel was briefly removed after it was flagged, but upon review it was then immediately reinstated.

“We work quickly to review all flagged content, but with millions of hours of video uploaded on YouTube every day, on occasion we make the wrong call.”

Novara Media to release video on channel shutdown

Novara Media is set to release a new video at 5pm titled 'YouTube Shut Us Down Without Explanation'.

It will be hosted by Michael Walker, Aaron Bastani and Ash Sarkar.

The video's description reads: "This morning our channel was deleted. After a public outcry we’re back. What does does it say about big tech and democracy that YouTube can wield such power?"

In a statement issued earlier today, Novara Media said: “This morning the Novara Media YouTube channel was deleted without warning or explanation.

“Novara Media is among the top 50 most watched news and politics channels in the UK.

“We play an important public service role and regularly feature interviews with politicians, human rights campaigners, scientists and activists around the world. We are also regulated by IMPRESS in the UK.”

It added: “We call on YouTube to immediately reinstate our account.”
