Another delay has hit the reopening of Lendal Arch after months of closure.

Originally the popular riverside route under Lendal Bridge used by pedestrians, cyclists and rowers accessing York Rowing Club was to be closed for three months.

But more than six months later, the Arch is still closed this morning.

The Environment Agency had said it would end the closure on Friday.

The Arch was closed at the beginning of May so that floodgates under Lendal Bridge could be upgraded as part of the five-year project to improve York's river defences.

The agency said it would reopen the Arch in July "at the start of the summer holidays".

But the Arch remained closed throughout July and August.

In a statement this summer the agency said: "Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, there have been delays and the road closure has been extended to October 22," it said.

"We are working with Northern Power Grid to complete the necessary work to the electricity cables so that the replacement gate can be installed as quickly as possible.

"During this time the access under Lendal arch will remain closed with the temporary flood defence in place."

It added:"The team has explored the possibility of partially re-opening the road whilst this work takes place, however this has been deemed not to be practical."

No date has been announced for the reopening
