THE number of York schoolchildren with Covid has soared in the past week.

City of York Council’s latest Covid data tracker report says that 307 schoolchildren at 42 schools across York tested positive for Covid in the seven days up to Monday.

The figure compares with 217 children testing positive at 36 schools just a week earlier.

The report also said that 873 children aged 12-15 had now had their first dose of the vaccine - only 10.4 per cent of the estimated population of this age.

Concerns about the slow pace of the roll-out has prompted the NHS to open up mass vaccination centres, such as the one at Askham Bar, to such youngsters from today.

The report said three care homes in the York area had had confirmed Covid cases.

Meanwhile, 30 individuals at the University of York were self-isolating after testing positive, with six self isolating at York St John University.
