YORK is one of the spookiest cities in England, a new study has revealed.

Researchers identified the most haunted places to live by analysing a range of other-worldly factors - from the number of paranormal occurrences and sightings to tales of UFOs, mythic legends, fairies, vampires and poltergeists.

The research by PaulCamper could help you track down fun Halloween activities - like a bus tour back in time to York's darkest days - or embark on a road trip to haunted spots.

The analysis found that Brighton is the most haunted place to live in England, followed by York in second and Bristol in third.

Out of the 146 paranormal sightings in Brighton, 116 were of haunting manifestations. There have also been 18 poltergeist sightings and even a sighting of a legend.

York's most notable haunted place was revealed as the Theatre Royal, where many claim 'the Grey Lady' manifests in a room behind the dress circle.

The ghost is reportedly a young nun who fell in love with a nobleman - who was thrown into a windowless room bricked up with no escape after rumours.

Some believe it is a good omen if you see the Grey Lady before a show.

York has had 80 paranormal sightings, researchers said. These include 70 haunting manifestations and five unknown ghost types, among others.
