FINDING your bike or moped in this collection could have been a bit of a problem in the Eighties.

Pictured here in 1981, York’s Parliament Street overflowing with bikes and mopeds of all shapes and sizes.

With most of the rack spaces taken, bikes had been parked three and four deep around flower tubs, lampposts, and seats.

The growing popularity of using two wheels to get around the city during that time had steered the council into providing four more racks, catering for a further 40 cycles in Parliament Street, before the end of the financial year.

In 1985, one reader had written to the Yorkshire Evening Press to express their concerns over the growing popularity of the moped as a means of transport, and the lack of parking places. “Why are moped riders not allowed to use the multi-storey car park in Piccadilly?” asked Mr Henderson.

For many, a bike or moped was considered the ideal mode of transport for getting into town.

Nowadays, we can see the e-scooter growing in popularity.
