THE Thirsk and Malton MP, Kevin Hollinrake, has welcomed news that 800 butchers are to be given temporary visas to work in the UK to ease the current abattoir labour shortages.

He said the current shortage of butchers was particularly acute in abattoirs and meat processing plants, such as Karro - formerly Malton Bacon Factory- in Malton.

The Tory MP said:"Butchering healthy pigs is incredibly distressing for farmers both emotionally and financially and it’s right the Government have now taken these steps, especially in the run up to Christmas pressures."

A Karro Food Limited spokesperson said: “The ongoing situation regarding the pork supply chain is well documented and we are grateful to Kevin Hollinrake MP for offering his support to our factory in Malton and helping to raise understanding of this important agenda at government level.

“We currently have a number of vacancies for skilled workers in our abattoir. Salaries for our colleagues range from £26,000 to £45,000 including bonuses. Full training will be provided to successful applicants and support for career progression.
