KIERAN Delaney is 23 and lives in Heworth. He works as a photographer and decorator and is a keen member of The Press Camera Club. Here, in our new Behind The Lens post, he tells us more about his passion and shares his favourite photos - mostly of York!

When and why did you take up photography?

I studied photography at All Saints sixth form for two years, back in 2015 to 2017. Before then I always had a passion for photography, taking pictures on my phone until eventually being treated to a proper DSLR camera for my birthday. Taking up photography for me was mainly because I loved the idea of documenting the things we see and being able to capture that forever.

Why do you love taking pictures?

I love taking pictures for many reasons. The main one being the idea that you can look back on certain memories, for example a hot air balloon ride over York was one of the best things I've ever done, and documenting that day through images and being able to look back at the photos and remember the views, the people you met that day etc, it's a wonderful thing. And also being able to inspire younger people like myself when I started out is a bonus! I'd always say to someone starting out to just go for it!!

What equipment do you use?

I shoot on a Nikon D5500, with a 35mm lens, a standard kit lens 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens. I also have a drone.

What is the favourite picture you have taken?

Tough question. I'd have to say an image from my hot air balloon ride over York. It was a September morning, and the sun was rising and we flew right over the city. The final image I got attracted a LOT of attention and I will never forget that photo.

Where is your favourite place to take photos?

York for its incredible history. I sometimes like to go to Leeds and capture the city scape. I really love shooting at nighttime, anywhere at night! I like the challenge of night photography as it's much more complex to just shooting through the day, you have to manually control!

When and why did you join The Press Camera Club?

I'd probably say I joined the camera club back in January 2018. I heard about the group through word of mouth and when I joined I loved seeing other photographers images of York and surrounding areas and liked the challenge of it!

If you could photograph anyone or any place who/what would it be and why?

I've always said New York is the number one bucket list for me, just a magical city for photography, so much going on, cityscapes, street photography, portraits etc! Another would have to be somewhere like Berlin for the street aspect.

What advice would you give anyone who wants to get into photography?

Just go for it. Don't worry about not having fancy equipment, anyone can take a photo and tell a story behind it! Once you get into it you can make a living from it, then you can treat yourself to the lenses and other equipment. It comes hand in hand!
