THREE men have been arrested on suspicion of possessing offensive weapons in a public place following a police operation in York.

North Yorkshire Police say suspicious behaviour in Lowther Street was reported by a member of the public at 9.21am today (October 11).

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "Officers from the Firearms Support Unit were alerted to the location to search for the suspects.

"They detained three local men, aged 47, 42 and 37, on Neville Street at 9.47am. The men are being held in custody for questioning.

"A police dog unit also attended and two offensive weapons were recovered on Eldon Street. The items in question are not firearms.

"Witnesses or anyone with information that could assist the investigation are asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the Force Control Room.

"Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org."

As The Press reported earlier today armed police shut Eldon Street from Markham Street upwards this morning.

One local resident who didn't want to be named, said: "There are loads of uniformed officers and police vehicles around with officers carrying plastic evidence bags looking in front gardens."
