The government’s interactive Covid website shows both wards coloured purple, indicating a Covid infection rate of more than 400 cases/ 100,000 of the population.

The figures were calculated on a rolling seven-day basis up to October 5 – meaning the actual situation today may have changed.

They show that in South Bank and Dringhouses there was a 57 per cent increase in cases in the week up to October 5 - up by 12 to a total of 33, giving an infection rate in the ward of 415.7 cases/ 100,000.

In Bishopthorpe & Copmanthorpe, meanwhile, cases increased by almost 23 per cent over the same period, up by seven cases to a total of 38, giving an infection rate of 458.4/ 100,000.

To the west and north of York, meanwhile, the Hammertons and Linton, Tollerton & Raskelf also have Covid infection rates above 400/ 100,000 - making them, too, purple on the map.

York as a whole, however, saw its Covid case rate drop by more than four per cent over the same period, down by 23 to 481, giving an overall rolling infection rate for the city of 227.9 cases/ 100,000 of the population.

North Yorkshire saw a six per cent drop in Covid cases over the same timescale, down by 179 cases to 2,756, although its Covid infection rate remains almost double that of York, at 444.1 cases/ 100,000.

The East Riding of Yorkshire also saw a five per cent fall, down by 67 cases to 1,252, giving a rolling infection rate of 364.8 cases/ 100,000.

Nationally a further 34,574 people tested positive in the latest figures released today, and there were 38 Covid-related deaths and 817 Covid patients admitted to hospital.

A further 26,157 people received a first Covid jab and 32,755 their second jab. That means that 78.5 per cent of the UK population aged 12 and over has now received both jabs.
