FOR this week’s trip down memory lane, we take a step back to October 1986.
Pictured here, stallholders from York market demonstrate the chaos that traders would face if the city’s footstreet plans were to go ahead.
As the traffic overflowed on to Parliament Street, coupled with roadworks on Skeldergate Bridge, and the closure of Deangate, police and traffic wardens were drafted in to direct the traffic during the protest.
Speaking to a Press reporter at the time, Erik Aaron, secretary of the Market Traders Association, said: “We have chosen a time for a demonstration where it could cause the least amount of problems for the ordinary man in the street but we have proved that by bringing in only half the number of vehicles which usually service the market during the day the whole situation is impractical.”
The traders’ concerns were eventually examined by an independent inspector in which it was agreed that the footstreet hours should be reduced.
