I read with interest about York’s bids to be a Rail HQ again (The Press, October 6). I do hope this is successful.

My father Stanley worked in the old North Eastern Railway offices, now The Grand Hotel.

Our life in York started following the disastrous Dr Beeching cuts supposed to reshape the railways in 1963.

My Father moved from Hull to York - we had to leave a small idyllic village.

He worked in industrial relations, frequently travelling with colleagues to meetings at other BR offices using the old BR network to get around -they could get anywhere in the days before technology when meetings were all face to face.

Many jobs were lost and early retirements were offered when they closed the old offices and downsized York’s railway operations. So please bring the rail HQ back to York.
