YORK Proms is planning to return with its “biggest event so far” - with a special ‘royal’ flavour.

Founder Rebecca Newman is preparing for the return of the event at the historic Museum Gardens in the city centre.

She said that after the hardships of the last two years, the event was what everyone needed.

And she added that following the sudden death of her husband and co-founder of York Proms, Jonathan, also known as Jay Fewtrell, due to a heart condition, she was "even more determined to keep the event alive for decades to come".

Rebecca said: “After the drama, sadness and isolation of the past two years, I’m sure the event will be just what everyone needs and will a great opportunity to enjoy a night of music together in one of York’s most iconic locations.”

Next year’s Proms event will also have a special ‘Right Royal’ theme to help celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

The York’s Proms own orchestra, The Yorkshire Festival Orchestra, will be returning under the musical direction of Ben Crick - and the soloists will be announced in the new year.

Once again, there will be a community stage, allowing local choirs and groups to participate in the event, which has become "a central part of York’s musical calendar".

Audience members are welcome to bring a picnic on the day, including alcohol, but there will also be catering on site, which will be announced nearer the time.

“We always encourage our audience members to dress up in patriotic outfits, which can be great fun, but this year, we are also encouraging a royal theme to the outfits, with special prizes for best dressed and most imaginative outfits,” Rebecca added.

York Press: The next event will be held in July 2022

Tickets for the event on Sunday, July 10, 2022 are on sale now at the York Proms website, at the Visit York Visitor Information Centre or by calling 01904 555670.
