I recently wrote about the mess and waste that I see on the streets and alleyways of York, and wondered if the Food Festival would add to the problem. However I was NOT attacking the festival itself - I think it’s a fantastic event.

My last letter also spoke of my upset and disgust at the state of the steps leading down to the sand bank next to Ouse Bridge, with a large amount of trash, broken glass and bottles and vomit.

I first mentioned this to the council weeks ago and was told it would be addressed quickly. Fast forward to a few days ago when nothing had been done.

However, as soon as my letter was published in The Press the very next day the steps had been cleaned and washed down.

I was grateful but wondered if anything would have happened but for the letter in The Press.

The story does not end there, however. On Saturday morning (September 18), just a few days after the clean up, the steps are already looking in a bad way again, with broken beer bottles and waste strewn all over the place.

I would like to ask the council if it would keep this area clean on a weekly basis - not just for me but for everyone.

And to those going out drinking, I would say: please just have a little thought for other people and the wildlife that frequent this area.
