A MAN allegedly stabbed a grieving son three times on the day the other man had been at his mother's funeral, York Crown Court heard.

Michael Bennison drove at speed into a Sherburn-in-Elmet car park where the son was talking to a friend, got out of his car with a bladed multi-tool and used it on him, alleged Tom Storey, opening the prosecution. One of the stab wounds punctured a lung and collapsed it, he said.

Then Bennison, 37, allegedly kicked or stamped on the son, breaking his eye socket. Giving evidence, a friend of the son  alleged that the son was covered in blood as Bennison ran back to his car and left the car park off Low Street.

“His eyes were glazing and he was unresponsive,” the friend alleged. “We were talking to him trying to keep him awake.”

Bennison, of Tempest Road, Leeds, admits wounding. He denies wounding with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm and carrying a bladed instrument in public.

The jury heard that the son had been drinking heavily at the wake following his mother’s funeral on August 27 and had gone to the Spar shop in Low Street.

The friend alleged that the son had been slurring his words, having difficulty standing straight and was not behaving well in the till queue.

The son had dropped a crate of beer which led to an argument between him and Bennison, who was immediately in front of him in the queue. The son had suggested that Bennison and he go outside.

Bennison left and the son asked his friend to give him a lift home and they crossed to the car park where they saw a second friend, alleged the first friend.

Mr Storey alleged that in just over three minutes, Bennison drove to his girlfriend’s, dropped off his shopping and returned to Low Street.

The second friend alleged Bennison arrived at speed as he was talking to the son in the car park. He had a multi-tool in his hand as he got out of the car, it was alleged.

The trial continues.
