Sparks from a passing train set fire to the railway embankment at Goathland.
The fire spread in two separate areas. Crews from Goathland, Whitby and Lythe used a portable pump, a 45mm jet, five backpack sprayers and six beaters to put out the flames.
The fire came just a day after Rose Fearnley, who manages a crew of nine volunteer firefighters at Goathland, received the Queen’s Fire Service Medal in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
