THE Covid rate has fallen in York, North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire, with the region showing no sign so far of being hit by any spike caused by the Indian variant.

Public Health England said today that the rolling seven day infection rate in the week to May 18 was down to 11.4 per 100,000 people in the City of York Council area, down from 13.3 yesterday and 12.3 on Friday.

The figure for the North Yorkshire County Council area was 13.6, down from 14.7 yesterday and 17.2 on Friday, while the rate fell in the East Riding of Yorkshire Council area to 20.2 from 20.8 yesterday and 23.4 on Friday.

Seven new cases were confirmed in York today after eight were confirmed yesterday.

Meanwhile, Selby - which was briefly the UK's worst Covid hotspot after an outbreak at a workplace - had only the 30th worst rate today, with the rate down to 43, compared with 434 in the UK's current hotspot Bolton.

Ryedale had one of the country's lowest rates of 1.8 after just one case was confirmed during the seven days, while Hambleton had a rate of5.5 after five cases.
