A MAN from York, who is set to take on a walking challenge which equates to seven marathons in seven days, has already raise almost £4,000 for charity.

Steve Smith, from Clifton Moor in the city, will be walking from Scarborough Castle to Liverpool's Albert Dock, covering a distance of 191 miles over a seven-day period - starting on Sunday (May 23), which will involve him passing through York on the third day.

The commercial director is aiming to raise money for Team Verrico, a cancer charity which he said is “close to his heart” after suffering from the disease himself in the past.

He has managed to raise £3,700 for the charity already - and said he is "delighted" with the response from donators as he has smashed his target of raising £2,500.

Steve, 56, said: “Team Verrico is a brilliant cancer charity that helps people who have been given terminal or life shortening cancer diagnosis.

“After having cancer myself many years ago, I just want to be able to give something back.

"With one in two people in the UK born after 1960 likely to have had some form of cancer in their lifetime, that means it has, or will, affect a lot of us.”

Steve will have donation buckets along the route and a card reader to take donations, plus people can scan his t-shirt which has a QR code on.

This is not Steve’s first time exerting himself for charity, after he has taken on a ‘double wing-walk’, which involved him losing 50 pounds in weight, and a skydiving challenge to fundraise for great causes.

He also has other challenges planned for the future, including a 400ft bungee jump, taking on underground climbs and zip wires and tackling the UK National Three Peaks in 24 hours.
