YORK Racial Equality Network (YREN) reopened its doors earlier this week, following the Covid-19 lockdown.

The group, a registered charity, is now able to meet face-to-face again at their weekly Friendship Group which caters for all ages at St Aelred’s Community Centre, Tang Hall (1pm-4pm).

Friendship Group coordinator, Lisa Evans, said: “Everyone is welcome to join our friendly and safe environment, to meet people from different backgrounds and learn new skills.

“Usually, we run a parents and toddler’s session, 1pm to 2.30 pm and an adults session, 2.30 pm to 4pm,” added Lisa. “However, during school holidays we cater for families.”

The Friendship Group sessions had to stop when St Aelred’s Community Centre was forced to close during lockdown, however fortunately restrictions are lifting.

“We have an exciting programme of events,” explained Lisa. “We opened with a rainbow themed session and invited everyone to come dressed in their brightest colours.

“On May 26, one of our members will be talking about Sicilian food and

bringing treats to try,” said Lisa. “We also have a teddy bear’s picnic and a sports day lined-up for June.”

All of the activities are free and include snacks and refreshments.

“We would really love people to join us for our gardening session on

June 16, run by Rooting For Justice, plus, on June 30, we have a circus skills workshop which will be fun for children and adults alike.”

One of the key aims of the Friendship Group is to prevent isolation and loneliness.

“One mum told us that YREN was a lifeline giving them something to look forward to each week,” added Lisa. “Another said that she and her children really enjoy the group as it’s an escape from home life and a chance to meet new and old friends.

“We are told that there is always something fun for both adults and children to get involved with, which is our aim. Entertaining the children gives the adults chance to unwind and mix with others.”
