THE success of a new residential housing development in the heart of York underlines the strength of the city’s housing market.
That is according to Paul Brown, managing director of Easingwold-based Caedmon Homes, the developer of St John’s Mews, in Penley’s Grove Street just outside the city walls.
The mews is on the site of the former Groves House Care Home and now houses one, two and three-bedroom apartments.
Mr Brown said 21 of the 29 homes have already been sold, with seven deals completed in the last two months.
He said: “The combination of the global pandemic and Brexit has made this a challenging and uncertain time for potential purchasers. But the market is now picking up fast and the interest in our remaining eight apartments is high.
“The available one, two and three-bedroom apartments range in price from £215,000 to £450,000, with the most prestigious three-bed apartment boasting the most fabulous views of York Minster and the beautiful city of York. Secure parking is available by separate negotiation on the larger apartments.
“York is one of the most attractive, if not the most attractive, city in the UK. But it hasn’t been immune from all the problems of the past 12 months. Now the city is ready to prosper again and there is every sign that its housing market will go into overdrive.
“There is definitely a pent-up demand for quality new homes and apartments in York, given the city’s beauty and history, terrific road and rail links, outstanding private and state school schools and overall quality of life.
“With the University of York year starting again in earnest in October, there may well be some parents who don’t wish their children to go into halls, because of lingering fears over Covid-19. If that’s the case, our apartments would not just make the perfect base for students, they would be an excellent investment, too.
“St John’s Mews is also very close to York Hospital, so doctors, nurses and administrators, who may well want a home conveniently near to their work, are very welcome."
St John’s Mews resident, Pam Samuel, said: “First of all, I liked the fact that St John’s Mews was not a multi-storey building.
"Also, the location mattered greatly as I wanted to be within walking distance of the city centre.
“I am very happy with my decision to move here. Everyone connected with the building and sale of my apartment has been helpful, friendly and accommodating.
“The development has been built to allow natural light into every room. High-quality materials and appliances and light-coloured decor makes the apartment and the building pleasing to look at and a pleasure to live in.”
