GORDON and Jean Massey are today celebrating their platinum wedding anniversary.

The couple married on May 14, 1951, at St Hilda’s Church in Darlington, after meeting while on holiday in Blackpool. They have lived all their married life in Nether Poppleton.

“The secret to a long and happy marriage is hard work, enjoying being together, and being the best of friends,” said Gordon. “And not having secrets. I can only speak for myself on that as I don’t know if Jean has any,” he laughed.

Gordon, 96, and Jean 91, have a son David, who lives in Acomb, a daughter, Pauline who lives in Goole, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Gordon worked all his life in horticulture for Challis of York, where Jean also worked.

Both were keen flat green bowlers for many years and enjoyed many holidays, the Isle of Wight being their favourite place, and family times together.
