A NORTH Yorkshire attraction has been revealed as one of the locations for Radio 1's Big Weekend.

Whitby Abbey has been named as one of the iconic backdrops for the music showcase being held on May 29 to 31 with more than 100 live performances across the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Covid pandemic has limited this year's event, but a number of the new sets will be filmed on location around the UK, including in North Yorkshire.

Whitby Abbey was mentioned as one such place by breakfast host DJ Greg James on The One Show this week when he said the four-day event would take place at several venues in the UK.

"We're doing really cool venues with really amazing artists", he said.

"They're going to be proper brand new performances, all available on iPlayer, BBC Sounds, on the radio, on Bank Holiday weekend."

Fans will be able to experience these on BBC Radio 1, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.

"It's great for live music, we're slowly but surely coming out of hibernation and we don't want to overwhelm ourselves with a massive festival," said Mr James.

"We can't do that obviously so we will encourage people to be in their gardens or hanging out with their mates in the park with the radio on."

Other stars taking part, according to Mr James, include Celeste and rock duo Royal Blood with further details yet to be confirmed.

Radio 1’s Big Weekend of Live Music will be designed for fans to enjoy with friends and family in parks, on beaches, in pub gardens or simply from the comfort of their own homes.
