I am delighted at Yorkshire’s good start to the season and the latest one run victory over Northants.
I was surprised, however, to see that Northants’ top scorer in the second innings was Extras at 48, made up of 4 no-balls and 44 byes.
Are Yorkshire playing without a keeper whilst David Bairstow is playing in India?
I have always had a keen interest in Yorkshire’s fortunes since a schoolboy.
I can still recall the names of members of the great pre-war team, including Hedley Verity, the Yorks and England bowler.
Whilst in the army in the war I went from Egypt to Italy in January 1944 and needed a warm sweater.
I got a second-hand one which had a name tape H. Verity.
I did not know at the time that Captain Hedley Verity of the Green Howards had been wounded in Sicily, taken prisoner and died in a German field hospital in Italy.
The khaki sweater served me well for the rest of my Army Service and for many years afterwards when out rambling.
