A GOLFER beat all the odds by achieving a hole-in-one during the Lord Mayor of York’s Charity Golf Day.

Phil Kelly was the first person in the competition's 14-year history to win a hole-in-one, said competition spokesman Graham Bradbury.

"The odds of making a hole in one are 12,500 to 1," he said.

"For professional golfers, the odds of making a hole in one drop to 2,500 to 1.

"We are lucky if we get four a year on our golf course at Pike Hills and would think that is similar around the country.

"I have been playing with my mates for over 20 years and none of us have had a sniff!

"It is a great feat to achieve a hole-in-one and this one was extra special as it was the first-ever to be scored on any Lord Mayor of York’s Charity Golf Days."

He said Phil, a retired Nestlé employee and member of Pontefract and District Golf Club, who achieved the feat on the par three 7th hole, received The Greg Love Award, sponsored by Rowley & Sons, from Pike Hills Club Captain, Mick Yates.

The Hentons 'B' team took home the Lord Mayor’s Trophy after finishing with 100 points from the stableford competition, he said, adding: "£2,800 was raised for the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity, Two Ridings Foundation, and a further £1,500 was donated to York Against Cancer from the proceeds of a raffle on the day.
