FIRE crews were called to cut free a driver who had been involved in a single road traffic collision and was then taken to hospital by the air ambulance.

Crews from Scarborough attended the incident at around 5.50pm yesterday in Lady Ediths Drive in the town.

It involved a black Volvo C30 which was being driven from the direction of Forge Valley towards Scalby Road when it collided with a tree near to Yorkshire Coast College.

The 28-year-old driver was trapped within the car and fire crews removed the roof so they could be freed. Fire crews used cutting equipment to free the driver.

The driver was then taken to James Cook Hospital by air ambulance with serious, but not life threatening, injuries.

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with daschcam footage relating to the collision to contact them.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw the black Volvo as it travelled towards the scene, or the collision itself, particularly anyone with dashcam footage.
