DANCE pupils can get back to class - but it's strictly socially distanced dancing at Jazzy J's brand new studio in York.

During lockdown, students have been learning via Zoom - but this week were able to meet their tutors in person at the new premises in Acomb.

Strict Covid guidelines apply and the children are allowed inside to do their dance lessons, but have to stay on a marked spot so that they are socially distanced from each other.

There are breaks between the lessons to avoid mixing during crossover times and parents and carers must remain outside the venue where they can drop off their children safely.

There are exceptions for baby ballet or children with impairments and medical conditions.

The studio, in Acomb Court, York Road, is a new venture for the dance school which has been running classes in local village halls for the past nine years.

The purpose-designed space hosts two separate dance studios with sprung dance floors, walls of mirrors, ballet barres, kitchens, reception area, dance uniform shop and changing rooms.

Jazzy J’s principal Jess Meredith said: “I’m still in a bit of shock that this has actually happened and we’ve finally opened our doors.

"We spent months running classes on Zoom and now to be able to physically teach our students as well as having our very own studio space is a dream come true.

"Having two separate studios means we have been able to add new classes to our timetable."

Jess is supported by fellow professional dance teachers Laura Clare and Mollie Pulleyn. Between them they teach 45 different classes a week covering every discipline from ISTD ballet, tap and modern, to street dance and musical theatre.

The school also puts on a bi-annual show during which all the students are invited to take part.

The classes are designed for ages 2½ years up to adults.

Jess said it was great to have a new beginning after a difficult year. "Like many other businesses, Jazzy J’s Dance Academy had to adapt quickly when the Covid restrictions hit, and within a few days of going into lockdown we set up online dance classes on Zoom for students.

“This past year has been a really difficult time for our students; they were separated from their friends and from the things they love to do.

"Over lockdown, we were determined to continue our dance classes online - but as much as we were very grateful for the technology available to us, it wasn’t always easy!

"However, we were really impressed at how our students progressed despite being taught virtually. Opening our own dance studio feels like a new beginning for us, and a chance to put the last year behind us."
