A MAN has died and a police investigation is underway after an ambulance was involved in a crash.
As The Press reported last night the A1079 Hull Road was closed both ways at Wilberfoss for most of the night after a collision between Sutton Lane and Sand Lane close to the Steer Inn.
Maintenance engineer Phil Nixon from Garton-on-the Wolds was passing the scene shortly after the accident happened at about 3.35pm.
He said: "An ambulance had gone in to a wall. The doors at the back of the ambulance were wide open, there were numerous people in the back of the ambulance and the front window had gone through.
"It happened just down the road from the pub and it was hard to tell if there were any other vehicles involved."
This afternoon a spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust said: “We can confirm that an emergency ambulance was involved in a road traffic collision at 3.30pm yesterday (April 22) on the A1079, Hull Road between Wilberfoss and Barmby Moor.
“First and foremost our thoughts are with the family of the man who sadly passed away at the scene.
“We are working with the police to help with their investigation into the cause of the collision.”
They were unable to confirm whether the man who died was a member of the public or one of the ambulance crew.
