A GROUP in York, which supports those living with disabilities, is aiming to raise money for a new 'adapted' bike for its members to use.

GoGet, a family run social enterprise in the city, focuses on high energy active pursuits primarily for people with autism and learning disabilities.

The group are looking to purchase a new 'adapted side-by-side companion' bike to help the people the team support to allow them to access the pleasures of cycling.

Katy Brooks, of GoGet, said: "Cycling is a fantastic sensory experience and the perfect way to access the great outdoors.

"These bikes are ideal for those who struggle with steering and braking, they offer security for people with epilepsy who may be at risk of seizures while cycling, and most importantly they provide an opportunity for social engagement for the people we support.

"Unfortunately, for a micro-enterprise such as ours, the expense is just too high for us to be able to purchase one ourselves, which is why we're hoping to raise money."

On a Side-by-Side, the individual sits alongside their support worker, allowing them to enjoy the sensory input of pedalling without having to worry about the braking or steering during the ride.

Riders are safely clipped into the seat, giving security for people who may have epilepsy in the event of a seizure.

The GoGet team currently have to rely on hiring the bikes, which limits the time members can spend on them, reduces the "scope and flexibility" of the support sessions, and increases the cost to the people they support.

The team at GoGet have launched a GoFundMe page, with a target of raising £5,500 to help purchase the new bike.
