THE team from a trust in York, which supports those living with impairments, are encouraging people to take on the ‘Wilberforce Way’ walking challenge to help them fundraise for a new learning centre.

The Wilberforce Trust, which supports people in North Yorkshire with visual and sensory impairments, is asking people to take on the “historic” walk to raise funds to build the new ‘Living and Learning Zone’ at the new Wilberforce House near York College.

A spokesperson for the trust said: “So many people have discovered the joy of walking, experiencing the outdoors and learning about nature.

“By signing up to this event, they can get out and about safely whilst raising funds for a good cause, so we would encourage people to sign up.

“We still need to raise £250,000 to fit out this centre with its café, activities room and drop-in area.”

By signing up to the challenge, participants will be invited to walk or run 60 or 120 miles recording it on their pedometer or app on a mobile device.

The trust, which can be traced back as far as 1833, will be sending out updates to participants about milestones along the walk - so that they can work out where they would be if they were doing the actual walk along the route.

Those that wish to take part will be invited to register for the event to receive a free t-shirt and eco-friendly wooden medal to wear while taking on the task.

The trust said the new centre will act as a “beacon of hope for anyone experiencing sensory loss”.
