WE asked readers to nominate their favourite fish and chip takeaways, cafes and restaurants and you delivered.

Hundreds of places in York and surrounding areas were recommended to The Press - making this YOUR guide to the best fish and chips around.

In fact, 250 customers who love their local chippy nominated their favourites with some names making the list several times.

From Butlers on Foxwood Lane and Millers Fish & Chips in Haxby to the vegan take on a British classic at Mr Chippy, this is the Press reader guide to fish and chips.

A brief low-down

Louise Bilbrough said her go-to is Butlers, describing them as "The best Fish and chip shop around by miles".

She said: "They are always friendly, the food is fresh and the portions are something else."

One reader recommended Blue Fin Tadcaster Road for their "fabulous, friendly, community spirited and delicious" culinary experience.

Another called on foodies to try out The Scrap Box in Dunnington, adding that it has "excellent quality and friendly staff" and she has "never been disappointed".

Mary Green has been going to Thompsons Fish & Chips on the A64 for takeaways since it opened.

Heather Hiscock said the meals from The Codfather on Burton Stone Lane are "always hot and tasty" with delivery "spot on throughout Covid".

For vegans, old romantic Alex Chapman says you can't go wrong with Mr Chippy.

Alex said: "My husband and I shared our first date here and before the pandemic- we were regulars, eating in every week. We still order in- can't go without our Mr Chippy! We've tried basically all the chippys and it's the best."

Meanwhile those who need a gluten free option might fancy trying Blue Fin on Hull Road which cooks their meals in a separate fryer.

William Holland recommended The Sea Catcher on Clarence Street for its "fantastic food at great prices" and "friendly staff and boss".

Michael Page said Thompson’s Fish and Chips on Malton Road has "great value, amazing quality fish in a beautiful batter".

He said: "They never fail, 10/10 fish and chips every time!"

Other top recommendations include: The Happy Haddock on the A19 at Deighton, Bish and Chips or the Fisherman's Wife on Bishopthorpe Road, Osbaldwick Fisheries, Wetherby Whaler near Poppleton, Heworth Plaice, Gale Lane Fisheries and Jenny's Fish & Chips.
