UPDATED 7AM: The road has now reopened and traffic has returned to normal.
UPDATED 10PM: The road remains closed tonight.
REPORTS are coming in that an ambulance has been involved in a crash that has shut a main road in to York.
The A1079 is closed both ways with slow traffic due to accident between Sutton Lane and Sand Lane close to the Steer Inn.
Maintenance engineer Phil Nixon from Garton-on-the Wolds was passing the scene shortly after the accident happened at about 3.35pm.
Phil said: "An ambulance had gone in to a wall. The doors at the back of the ambulance were wide open, there were numerous people in the back of the ambulance and the front window had gone through.
"It happened just down the road from the pub and it was hard to tell if there were any other vehicles involved."
The Press has contacted Yorkshire Ambulance Service and we'll update the story when we hear back from them.
It's affecting traffic between Wilberfoss and Kexby.
