The former Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has been talking about his memories of the Duke of Edinburgh.

Speaking on BBC Television, he described how Prince Philip had a deep questioning faith, preferred short church services and sermons and liked the Book of Common Prayer.

He told a story of the Duke of Edinburgh talking about birds in flight and how, no matter how high they fly, their feet always pointed to the ground.

"That is why they always land safely", the Duke had told him.

The former Archbishop repeated a prayer by Cardinal Newmann loved by the Duke:

"May the Lord support us all the day long,

Till the shades lengthen and the evening comes,

and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done.

Then in his mercy may he give us a safe lodging,

and holy rest, and peace at the last."
