YORK Minster has honoured the life of Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh in prayer, music and by the tolling of its biggest bell.
Nearby Catholic church St Wilfrid's in Duncombe Place has also held a special service for him.
Yesterday's Choral Evensong at the Minster was a thanksgiving for the Duke's life. It was led by the songmen and choral scholars of the Minister and included music by Francis Jackson, who was the cathedral's director of music for 36 years. The service was streamed and can be seen on youtube.com
Today, Great Peter, the largest bell at the cathedral, tolled 99 times starting at 2pm and finishing shortly before the national silence at 3pm.
The cathedral has been open since 2pm for private prayer and the lighting of candles, as well as holding three services - morning prayer, holy communion and evening prayer.
Yesterday evening, St Wilfrid's Roman Catholic Church in Duncome Place held a sung requiem Mass.
