MORE than 8,000 members of the Scout Association and Girlguiding from across York and North Yorkshire are expected to participate in a virtual St George’s Day celebration on Sunday April 25, instead of the traditional parade through York to the Minster.

Organisers say this year’s theme, Journeying on Together, has been selected in tribute to the great strives made by volunteers and young members during the pandemic which has seen the two organizations offer flexible distance, blended and virtual meetings.

"Journeying on Together includes a mix of live and pre-recorded sessions that will be broadcast as a ‘Zoombaree’ on YouTube," said a spokesperson.

"The day starts at 9am and culminates with a St George’s Day and Founder’s Day Service at 3pm, where all 8,000 members in attendance will renew their promise together, similar to the traditional services held every year in York Minster and elsewhere across the county.

"County dignitaries due to attend include Jo Ropner, Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire and Scout County President, Pat Cliff, Girlguiding North East England President, and Chief Constable Lisa Winward."
