While the name of the campaign ‘Kill the Bill’ is poorly chosen, I support the desire to prevent our nation from abandoning the norms of a democratic society.

The right to protest is enshrined in the UN declaration on Human Rights and in the European Convention on Human Rights. Britain is a signatory to both.

These fundamental rights and freedoms are the cornerstones of civilised and democratic societies.

That this Johnson government should be seeking to remove fundamental rights from British citizens is unsurprising. He has already showed contempt for international law.

Human rights matter. The right to life; the rights to a fair trial, privacy and freedom of thought; the right to belong to a trades union; the right to free speech; the right not to be tortured or enslaved. And the right to protest.

As he parades the British flag, Johnson seeks to dismantle our nation’s democratic values.

The list of nations that refused to sign the UN declaration on human rights back in 1948 tells its own story: Saudi Arabia, the Soviet Union, South Africa, Yugoslavia, Poland. Now add North Korea. And this is the club Patel and Johnson want to UK to join? No thank you.
