Yet again more revelations of enormous salaries enjoyed by a select few on the Ferris wheel that’s City of York Council salaries (Council to recruit two new senior officers on £100k salaries as part of restructure, April 10).

These salaries seem to be getting ever higher with each turn of the financial year.

The old justification chestnut that we have to offer these high salaries to attract the very best people really doesn’t wash here anymore.

Is it these ‘best people’ that were responsible, for example, for resurfacing a large stretch of Tadcaster Road at huge cost - only for it to almost immediately be ripped up for major gas works, presently going on?

Not the best, definitely not earned, and most certainly not justified. And York citizens are again the captives, paying for this in a maximum five per cent rise in council tax - accompanied with an £8 million cut in services.
