CITY of York Council has outlined how it is preparing for the easing of lockdown restrictions next Monday.

A spokesman said extra measures introduced in the city will include the installation of temporary public toilets and additional litter bins, and additional cleaning will take place in the city centre.

He said it would also extend the Covid Support Marshalls programme until the end of June and submit planning applications for temporary managed outdoor spaces to help people see friends and family safely.

It would also make it easier for people to get tested and open up symptom-free testing to all adults and children of secondary school age and above.

Council leader Keith Aspden said the relaxation had been made possible by collective efforts over the past few months and he was 'hugely grateful to residents and businesses for their commitment to keeping our city safe.'

But he warned against complacency, saying: "The virus is still here and a lot of the population are yet to have the vaccine. We all have a role to play in keeping the people we love safe and the places we love open. Please remember hands, face, space and meet your friends and family outdoors in the fresh air.

“As a council we are still here to support residents and businesses who need our help. We are well aware some businesses are still unable to reopen and will work to process grants to them as quickly as possible. Our community hubs are still there to support residents who need it on 01904 551550 or by emailing COVID19help@york.gov.uk.”
