Some of the incendiary bombs dropped on the seventh air raid in the vicinity of Shipton Road fell in the Flaxton rural district as the City of York boundary then was on the city side of Clifton Park sports ground (Can you help identify these forgotten heroes of wartime York?, April 2).
The RDC had a rescue party and auxiliary fire service (AFS) manned by volunteers, in a timber hut at the end of Fairway.
I recall an earlier tragedy, perhaps 1941, when a random enemy plane dropped its bombs, killing two sisters on Osbaldwick Lane. The bombs also shattered many windows.
