The wooden porch of a house in Fossway, Stamford Bridge, caught fire because of hot ashes which were put in a wheelie bin this morning.
The fire spread to the frame of the porch, then to a fence and guttering.
A neighbour had managed to put it out using a garden hose by the time Humberside firefighters arrived just before 11am.
"Advice given," said a fire spokseperson.
