A NEW grocery store full of organic and vegan treats has opened its doors in York city centre.

The family-run business is owned by couple Eylem Kaya and Haydar Akboga who wanted to bring more options for different or healthier diets to the high street.

Inspired by the shops and small community of Eylem's Kurdish hometown in Turkey, the couple wanted to create a new hub for locals.

Based at 1 Goodramgate, shoppers can find organic, natural and gluten free options, wholesome children's meals, vegan ready meals, vegan fudge, free range eggs, drinks and snacks among other grocery shop essentials.

York Press:

The shop will temporarily open 9am-7pm for the first few weeks after its launch with 20 per cent discount available until April 8.

Eylem told The Press: "Because of the current situation in the world, I think the most important thing is health in people's life. I think lots of people, it's been eating junk food or kind of unhealthy food.

"We can support our community in York.

"We're doing a discount to support the local people. Everyone's struggling with Covid-19.

"We're really excited. My partner is doing most things because I have a little girl, three and a half years old. I have to look after her as well. In my free time I come and help him."

Explaining her love of York, she said: "I love York. I used to live in London but York is like our home city. Now, if I go to London I can't wait to get back to York.

"I love all the local people. They are more friendly.

"I grew up in a small village in Turkey, I can see in the big city they don't care about each other but York is not like this. During Covid-19 our community has been wonderful."

The shop is housed in the former home of Monkbar Chocolates and Monkbar Barbers.
