YORK looks set for a major summer tourism boom if the results of a new survey are anything to go by.

The nationwide poll of more than 2,000 UK adults found that York Minster is the top historical attraction people want to visit once lockdown restrictions are lifted, ahead of big name rivals such as Edinburgh Castle, Stonehenge and the Tower of London.

The survey, conducted by YouGov for Uber, had found that 35 per cent of people intend to visit a historical site when they have full freedom to travel.

In a poll of the ‘top attractions accessible using Uber’ that people intend to visit after lockdown, Shambles came second, behind only Kew Gardens and and ahead of The Royal Mile in Edinburgh, the British Museum and Chester Zoo.

Tourism and Minster officials have welcomed the survey's findings. Ashley Young, of Make It York said it was 'great news for York, and for the city's tourism and hospitality businesses who are looking forward to safely welcoming visitors back again as lockdown restrictions ease.'

He said: "Offering everything from iconic attractions and museums to a diverse range of indie shops and world-class hospitality businesses, York is a wonderful destination for a city staycation and we are delighted to hear it's been ranked so highly."

A Minster spokeswoman said it was looking forward to welcoming visitors back, with plans in place to reopen the cathedral on May 17 if the roadmap allows."Admission will be pre-booked ticket only to control capacity and to enable track and trace," she said. "There will be route finding signage in place and notices reminding people to keep 2m distance. Face masks will be mandatory: hand sanitising stations will be in place. Bookings will be available from April 26."
